ABOUT THIS PROJECT

On behalf of Yukon First Nations, the Council of Yukon First Nations (CYFN) is leading the development of the Family Preservation Wellness Centre. The centre will encompass temporary housing with a 32-bed capacity and will provide Indigenous-led programming for women and children. As the first of its kind in the Yukon, the design and operation of the centre will be inherently reflective of Yukon First Nations. 

The centre will provide safe and secure temporary housing which is vitally important for women and children fleeing abuse. This temporary housing offers a safe place to stay where women and children are provided with meals and access to supportive culturally-relevant programming. Women housed at the centre will be supported in accessing permanent housing and will have access to other programs and services through CYFN and its partners.

This project will be unique in that Yukon First Nations will be supporting and providing services for Yukon First Nations.

KEY FEATURES

  • Single-storey, wood frame construction totalling 15,069 square feet of floor space.
  • 15 apartments, 32-bed capacity.
  • Designed to reflect First Nations, prioritizing gathering spaces, communal food spaces, and natural light.
  • Separate high and lower barrier area, to safely meet the needs of women with children and women who require more supports.
  • Common areas, including dining area and kitchen, wet workshop, cultural room and program room.
  • Indoor and outdoor gathering spaces.

WHO WILL BE HOUSED?

This project will provide temporary housing to Yukon First Nations and Indigenous women and children who may be: 
  • Fleeing abuse;
  • Experiencing homelessness;
  • Dealing with mental health and addictions issues; and
  • Identifying as LGBTQ2S+ women.

SITE LOCATION

The Yukon government has transferred the property at 10 Eldorado Drive. The Whistle Bend Master Plan identifies the site for Community Use and the site is zoned for Community Services, which permits Supportive Housing.
