COUNCIL OF YUKON FIRST NATIONS ANNOUNCE GRAND CHIEF CANDIDATE

ONE CANDIDATE BIDS FOR THE POSITION OF GRAND CHIEF FOR CYFN

WHITEHORSE (June 1, 2016) – The CYFN nominations for the position of Grand Chief with the Council of Yukon First Nations have officially closed. One candidate put his name forward for the position of Grand Chief, that being Mr. Peter Johnston of Teslin Tlingit Council.

“I am pleased that one citizen has stepped up to take the lead. It’s an exciting time for Yukon First Nations as we need new energy and vision. Our Self Governing Nations have evolved as the leaders of Self Government in this country and they are recognized and respected for their work,” said current Grand Chief, Ruth Massie, “It has been an honour to represent our people over the past six years and I am thankful for the many opportunities I have experienced. Now it’s time to retire, relax and do other things, like work on my bucket list-which is pretty long. I appreciate my working relationships and I want to thank our leaders for our strong working relationships we all have. I wish them the success they deserve in strengthening their governments.”

The CYFN constitutional rules outline that if one candidate has been nominated for the position of Grand Chief, then the chairperson shall declare that nominee to be elected as Grand Chief by acclamation at the General Assembly.

The swearing in ceremony for Grand Chief of CYFN will be held during the General Assembly of the Council of Yukon First Nations which will be hosted by Little Salmon/Carmacks First Nation on their traditional territory at Airport Lake from June 28-30, 2016.
